Installing the Executables
==========================
Include the location of the executables (the bin directory) into
your Unix search path. This is important because Sniff consists
of two cooperating processes and because the sniffserver
process is started by Sniff if it does not run already.
Start the sniffserver process manually if you try out Sniff and
get twice the error message "Could not start the server process
sniffserver."
Installing the ETRC File
========================
Both ET++ and Sniff store user dependent information in the ETRC
file. Copy the ETRC file of the distribution into your home
directory to obtain sensible default values. You do not have to
modify the ETRC file directly. All modifications concerning Sniff
users can be made in Sniff's Preferences dialog.
Installing Fonts (SunView only)
===============================
If you want to use Sniff under SunView you have to set the
environment variable "ET_DIR" to the Sniff installation directory
where the sunfonts directory of this distribution is located
(e.g., INSTALLDIR/Sniff1.6).
Preparing the Demonstration Projects
====================================
Set the environment variable "SniffDemoSources" to the src
directory of this distribution (e.g, INSTALLDIR/Sniff1b/src).
This makes it possible to open the demonstration projects located
in the projs directory without further reconfigurations.
Preparing for Nonlocal Parsing (Optional)
=========================================
By default the sniffserver process is started on your local
workstation. This default can be overridden in Sniff's Preferences
dialog. To make it possible for Sniff to find a remote
sniffserver process your system administrator has to define a
sniffserver service.
This is achieved by inserting the line
sniffserver NUMBER/tcp # NUMBER -> number following local conventions
into the /etc/services file of your yellow pages server.
